I like any comments on single woman 30ish staying in Nice. good areas to stay, places to avoid, good activities
I was there a few years ago traveling solo. I stayed in a hostel a few blocks from the beach (can't remember the name). I never felt unsafe, even taking a night time stroll along the beach. I was approached once by a flirtatious Frenchman but you just keep walking and politely ignore. I day tripped to Antibes, Monaco and Canne. This was during the Grand Prix and film festival. If it weren't for the attraction of these events, I might have stayed in Nice and done more exploring of the town. Something I did enjoy was walking around the docks and admiring all the million $ yachts.
Cathy, Although I'm a somewhat "older" single male, I felt that Nice was perfectly safe, even in the evenings. Regarding good areas to stay, places to avoid, good activities", I'd suggest checking either the France 2012 or Provence & French Riviera Guidebooks. You should be able to find the books at Chapters at Richport Town Centre (open 09:30-21:00). Were you planning to stay primarily in Hostels or budget Hotels? It's difficult to suggest good activities, as I'm sure your preferences will be different from mine. However, one possibility would be a day trip to Monaco & Monte Carlo. I thought the Oceanographic Museum was excellent, and don't forget the Changing of the Guard at the Palace (11:55 daily - get there early for a good vantage point). You could also visit the Church where Princess Grace & Prince Rainier are interred. As I recall, the Bus fare from Nice is only €1 each way. The Bus goes through Villefranche sur Mer, which is another beautiful spot. Eze is also nice, but I'm not sure of the public transportation options there. Happy travels!
To add to the excellent posts: Be sure to get the Rick Steves Provence And The French Riviera book, not his France book. The former has much more information about Nice and the surrounding region. You can then decide for yourself what interests you. I stayed at the Nice Garden Hotel http://www.nicegardenhotel.com/. It was fine, although the location was a little far from the old town (but close to the Promenade des Anglais and the beach). From Nice, you can take buses and trains all over the Riviera, cheaply and easily. The book has details of all the routes and how frequently they run. I'm a single man, and I didn't care for this area, so take that into account when reading my comments. I will say that I liked my time in Monaco more than most people do. I also enjoyed the Botanical Gardens there more than Rick did. I'll second Ken's recommendation of the aquarium, and I liked the car exhibit (they don't like it being called a "museum" as it's the Prince's personal collection). Most fascinating was seeing that the castle is built on a rock that seems easy to defend; I guess that's part of how Monaco maintained its independence for so long. I also liked seeing Renoir's house in Cagnes-sur-mer, and the views from the top of the town. I loved the gardens in Eze-le-village, and the views from there as well (much better than any free views in Eze). The Fondation Maeght in St. Paul de Vence was fascinating.
