These three cities are on our "must-see" trip through Europe in mid-April. We will probably take the train from place to place. We are thinking of 10 days. Any suggestions - or close-by places are welcome. You're the best!
you only have 10 days but these cities are not that close to each other.
Salzburg is beautiful. We visited it in 2010 with our two sons. Before leaving home we made sure to re-watch "The Sound of Music" and it was cool to note all of the places that we could find from the movie when we visited. :-) We did a lot of walking around on our own - lunch at the top of the fortress was pretty awesome. We viewed Mozart's house which was just ok. We did a "Fraulein Maria" bike tour which was pretty fun. Dinner at the Augustiner is worth doing. We also visited the nearby Hallein Salt mine, which was quite interesting (although fairly long lines). Most of these are recommended in the Rick Steves Germany book (Salzburg chapter). Rick (as always) recommends some pretty great stuff!
You might want to look into Air Berlin also, and compare it with the train between these cities. You should fly open jaw, into Nice and out of Saltzburg. Nice to Venice is a full day on the train, but interesting along the coast. You may need to change in Ventimiglia, on the French/Italian border and in Milan. As for the Venice-Saltzburg, someone else will know more than I do. Bon voyage.
