My husband and I will be traveling this summer in Provence then catching a train in Nice for Cinque Terre. We were going to stay a short distance from Nice, but have thinking more about staying in Nice just to be closer to the train station to catch the earliest train out in the morning. Has anyone stayed in Nice lately and, if so, can you comment on your accommodations? Thanks.
The all-time great deal: The ETAP on Rue/Ave Californie for seventy-five bucks. It's once street back from the beach/promenade, but the buidling in between is low. You get a view of the Med through the standard two-by-two window if you have a street-side room. Not grand, but spotless.
I haven't been to Nice recently, but if my memory serves me right, there is an Ibis hotel a few doors away from the train station. We have stayed there a couple of times when catching a train the next day. Perfectly acceptable, if charmless. If you've ever stayed at an Ibis, you'll have an idea of what you get. They do have their uses, however; and we've stayed at them in several places, usually when needing to catch a train or plane the next morning.
The Hotel le Royal is very nice and right on the promenade. Do NOT stay at the Hotel Felix in the pedestrian area. Very dirty, very noisy.
Christine, I wouldn't be overly concerned about staying near the train station. Ask the staff at your Hotel to make arrangements for a Taxi the day before you'll be travelling, and you'll have a quick ride to the station (probably in a Mercedes). Note that you'll be going to Nice Ville. You might have a look at This Hotel. Some rooms have great views of the ocean and Promenade des Anglais. Happy travels!
Especially early in the morning, before the rush hour, pretty much anywhere in Nice or surroundings is just a few minutes by taxi away. It looks like a big spread out city but it is actually very easy and fast if the traffic is OK. We stayed at the Nice Garden Hotel which is a few streets in from the beach towards the tourist info. Too far for us to walk, uphill, but would be a snip in a car. BTW - about the car - I hope you don't have one 'cause parking in Nice is ruff - really ruff. We have taken many trains from Nice Ville station. The area around the station and towards the bulk of the nearby hotels is pretty grim, as are most of the hotels. We often stay in Ibises when we can't find better but I know that, because of the neighborhood, we wouldn't stay at that Ibis. We would do at the one near the old town. We scoped out plenty places when we stayed last in Nice. We stay in Monaco now. Hey - that's an idea! Its easy walking to Monaco station from the Novotel in Monaco, as well as several other hotels, even in Beausoleil. Summer tends to have the highest prices - maybe Ed's idea is best if price is a consideration. If you were to wind up in Monaco the train from Nice to Italy stops there, but it is a little later in its journey.
Thank you so much for this great advice. We're going to look into all of this.
I reccomend either the Nice Garden Hotel or Nice Home Sweet Home. I've stayed at both and they are within 5-10 minutes from the train station toward the beach. Check reviews on Tripadvisor and websites if possible.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts. We were able to book a double room at the Star Hotel @ 89 Euros, which we thought was a good deal. The first 20 reviews on TripAdvisor were very good and it's only a 10 min walk to the train station.
I should also add that at that time of the year (early July) we thought it was definitely doable for a 1-night stay.
I had a pleasant few days at Hotel Durante in Nice last year. It is close to the train station in its own nook off the main street. I may return this year, if I am in Nice.
I am also hoping to catch a train in Nice and head up to Cinque Terre! Have you heard anything about the weather? I'm going next month (March) and heard Europe is in a deep freeze?! Wondering if this is affecting the trains in Nice and the coastal areas of Italy...?
