Nice/Arles Hotel

End of July will be picking up my daughter who will be finishing 6-months of studies in Paris-then-Arles. Spending one night in Nice. 3-4 nights in Provence, probably Arles (plan is to stay in Arles as home base - but this can be changed. Your suggestions for comfortable, unique lodging would be appreciated and helpful as I make my decision. My wife, myself and two 20-yr old "children".

We stayed at Hotel Calendal in Arles - right beside the colosseum. www.lecalendal.com- it is a bit funky and I think the girls would enjoy it. Do tour the rest of the town as well. There is a restaurant 3-4 doors up to the right(facing the hotel) called the Cricket. Small and you have to make a reservation. Best meal I had in France.
Nice- Hotel Mecure -RS suggestion - right on across the street from the Mediterrean, boardwalk and around the corner from the old city and very reasonable, modern and clean - breakfast too expensive when the cafe's in the old part offer the best cafe and croissants.
Happy travels

I also highly recommend Hotel Calendal, the staff is so friendly & helpful and the the lunch we ate in the hotel restaurant was one of the best we had in all of France. We had a lovely balcony that overlooked the garden. I would go back in a heartbeat!

We stayed at the historic Hotel d'Arlatan in Arles - a former duke's (or some aristocrat's) residence turned into a hotel. Centrally located, close to all the main sites, many restaurants, shopping, etc. Has a garage if you're driving, and only a 10- to 15-minute walk to the train station if you're not.

Thank you for your suggestions. Interestingly enough the Calendal was mentioned to my wife by someone she happened to be talking to. We looked at their website and it seems very nice.
& thank you for the Nice suggestion also. I saw that hotel mentioned in RS. I guess I always look for other's points of view, too.

I can recommend the Hotel Du Musee, which we found through the TI office when we were in Arles a few years back. Great location that is within easy walking distance of most everything -- a few blocks from the river and maybe 5 minutes to the square, a few minutes more to the arena. Comfortable though not fancy accommodations in an old building surrounding a lovely enclosed courtyard where they serve breakfast in the morning and wine in the afternoon. Friendly but never intrusive owners.
