Four of us will be landing at Cote d'Azur. What are the easiest and frugal ways to get to Monte Carlo? We'll be staying at the Fairmont.
Take the train to Monte Carlo. With luggage the bus would be a miserable experience. You can take a cab from the train station to your hotel in Monte Carlo.
Ken Do you have the RS Provence and French Riviera book? There are clear instructions in there. Cheapest is bus, hard to beat €1 pp for frugal. Easiest is taxi, won't get close to bus price. Middle is walk to train near airport, train to Monaco, walk. Which do you prefer?
Thanks Nigel. I don't have Rick's France book. I looked through it a few month ago at a library and didn't remember he covered Nice. I should have looked before posting.
OK, Ken, we can still help. Which option did you prefer?
I'm not sure where the Fairmont is in relation to where the bus runs. Unless it's spot on, the taxi is probably the best choice. Hopefully, we could get a taxi-van because I'm sure all four of us wouldn't fit in a normal cab with all of our luggage.
I don't know if you are a Formula 1 motor racing fan - maybe so with the race getting to Austin in a year or so and Katy only half a state away - but if so it is easy to picture the Fairmont. When you go down to the hairpin it is ahead and to the left. As you go up to Mirabeau its to the right, and when you go down to the tunnel and go underneath, what you are going underneath is the Fairmont. The bus from Nice drops off at the tourist information which to the Fairmont would be a 5 or 10 minute walk. Down the gardens towards the Casino, bear left steeply down the hill staying in the gardens and always keeping left and down. When you get to the hairpin look over to the left and you are there. If you take the train you either need a bus or taxi to Nice Ville, the main station in Nice. Or, you can walk about 10 minutes from the terminal (I'd try in the daytime first) to Nice-St-Augustin station from whence its not a bad train ride several stations along the coast (sit on the right) to Monaco where, as suggested, you could get a taxi or two.
When you exit the airport, head to where the bus stops are, just outside the door on the left hand side. There is a bus ticket counter that sells a direct express bus to Monaco. This bus leaves hourly, non-stop using the highway, then continues to Menton. If I remember correctly (I used it last April to Menton), it stopped very close to the Fairmont. Forget the train -- door-to-door express bus service is MUCH better!! This one is a no-brainer: 45 minutes, TAM - Rapides Côte d'Azur company, Nice Airport Express to Monaco & Menton, bus line #110. After a long flight, this is an easy and worthwhile expense... http://uk.niceairportxpress.com/
