My family of adult children ages 18, 21 & 30 and my husband and myself will be spending 12/30- 1/3 in Munich. My concern is New Year's Eve. Where shall we dine? What shall we do? Our hotel offers a "gala dinner" which is very expensive and includes foods which my picky "children" won't eat. Can anyone help me come up with a fun plan for our evening? Thank you very much for your help!
Hi Joanne,
Have you been in Munich for Silvester / New Years Eve before? If not, I won't say too much about the fireworks. That way, you can decide for yourself if you want to google to get informed, or instead be somewhat amazed / surprised. I will say that if you happen to be in Germany or Austria a few days before the 31st, you'll notice that many shops, even grocery stores, will suddenly make available for purchase quite a large variety of fireworks. It wouldn't hurt to get a hold of some; that way you'll be ready. There are some recommended places in the city for excellent fireworks viewing... Dependable info can be found if you search at the toytownmunich website. Take some stories you read there with a grain of salt, though. Dining options won't be a problem. Lots of people are out and about this evening, so there will be lots of possibilities for you and the family. Like in the USA, there are places that do the gala all-inclusive thing, for example. You might find the city website muenchen.de helpful, they have some info on restaurants in English. And keep in mind that shops will be open until 2pm, whereas on 1st January (state holiday) things are mostly closed. If the "kids" want to do something different, the Tollwood Silvesterparty might be something they'd want to look into. Starts around 7pm, five different venues for a good variety of music and dancing / DJs, goes until the wee hours. Costs about 20€ a ticket. At 42, I'm too old for such stuff, but the Tollwood Christmas Market is in my opinion something to see, and I've enjoyed it every time I've been there. I'm sure you and your family will have a memorable time in München... Viel Spaß!
