New Mystery author based in the Dordogne, France

I just discovered a new author who is writing mysteries based in the Dordogne in France. The author is Martin Walker and the first book is Bruno, Chief of Police. It's a lovely book. It has a good sense of place and involves the issues and problems that place in this time. I really am enjoying it. Anyone who is contemplating a visit to the Dordogne or to France in general should search it out. Pam

I really enjoyed it too. And the sequel to "Bruno, Chief of Police", which is called "The Dark Vineyard" was published recently. I just checked it out of the library and am eager to start reading it!

Pamela: I completely agree! Just reading that fun little book took my memory right back to our sunny honeymoon in the Dordogne. I cannot wait to get there again. Walker describes the foods of the region so well. There is a Bruno, Chief of Police website where Walker has lots of fun things - including some great recipes. The peasant soup - Tourain - is now a staple in our home. Looking forward to receiving Dark Vineyard for Xmas. Have fun.

You might also check "Deadly Slipper" by Michelle Wan. Sort of a murder mystery/orchid hunt combo set in Beynac, Sarlat and smaller towns like St. Cyprien, Le Buisson.

I just picked up the second book. Yes, I bought the hardcover. I felt the urge to give him sales so that he'll write a third book! Pam

It looks good. I still love reading the "Inspector Pel" series by the late Mark Hebden. His daughter, Juliet, still writes some stories with the same characters. It's set in Burgundy. It can be a challenge to find them as they were published in England a long time ago, but great fun.

Thanks for the tip, Pamela. We love mysteries. I used to get books set in locales we were about to visit, but now find they are a lot more fun to read after we have visited a place. The "Hey! we were there!" factor gives me a kick and revives happy memories, too.
