We are making our annual 3-day trip to Garmisch next month, and I am looking for a couple of new things to do. We have done the castles and the churches, been up the Zugspitze a couple of times, done a traditional evening, and of course walked miles and miles. I am looking for interesting villages nearby, new sights to see. The only definite plan we have is to walk around the Eibsee. Thanks for any ideas; we will have a car and my husband is fluent in German.
I am constantly amused by people who write in saying they want to go to a certain place but they don't know of anything they want to see there. Then why are you going there?
I'll give you an alternative. Try the upper Iller valey of the Oberallgäu, around Oberstdorf. There are things to do there. Oberstdorf is a delightful, authentic Alpine village, kind of what Vail would like to be, but isn't. You can go up to the Kleinwalsertal and hike in the Austria Alps. Lindau and the Bodensee are just a day trip away.
Another alternative, at least as a day's train trip from Munich, would be the castle at Burghausen.
If you haven't visited the Fraundorfer in the Partenkirchen section of town for dinner, give it a try. The food is pretty good, if not the absolute best in town. The atmosphere, however, is not to be missed.
You could check out Mittenwald, although to be honest, other than the violin makers, there isn't much here that Garmisch-Partenkirchen doesn't have.
Up the road a few kilometers, Oberamergau has an interesting monastery.
If you make an annual pilgrimage to Garmisch, there probably isn't much more I could recommend that you haven't already done or seen!
I was hoping for some new information, maybe some small place another traveler had been charmed by. We enjoy just being in Garmisch; that's why we visit. I'm still hoping someone has a favorite little town...
Hi Carrie,
Our favorite village is Mittenwald. If you haven't been there... go! It's gorgeous!
Hall in Tirol is another favorite of ours. Very nice and un-touristy old town and pedestrian zone. It's about an hour away and about 10 miles east of Innsbruck. A great place for dinner there is the BurgTaverne in Burg Hasegg. Great medieval atmosphere.
Also in the area is Swarovski Crystal Works in Wattens, Tratzburg Castle and Schloss Ambras on the southern outskirts of Innsbruck.

If you feel up to a day trip, Italy's Sud Tirol and the towns of Sterzing/Vipiteno and Brixen/Bressanone (our favorite in the area... very beautiful old town) are very worthwhile. About a 2 hour drive each way including the Brenner Pass.

thanks, Paul. those are some great alternatives. Has anyone been to Cochel am See?
Hi again Carrie,
We didn't go to Kochel am See but we loved our visit to Benediktbeuren nearby. We looked around the stunning church there and had lunch in their very nice beer garden. Didn't seem touristy at all, as most seemed to be business people having lunch. Bad Tolz is a very nice town nearby also.
