neuschwanstein tickets and rail

I will be going to Neuschwanstein in early July and have 2 questions:
1. Can we reserve and/or purchase Neuschwanstein tickets at either the TI or Euraide in Munich? I don't think we want to take the tour, as we can get there via railpass and bus, but am trying to avoid the 'line' once we arrive.
I know i can go on-line or via phone to reserve -- was wondering about in-person a couple days prior?

  1. Since we have eurail passes, i'd like to use those to get to Neuschwanstein. Am I correct that we'd take the train to Fussen and then a bus to the castle? Having a hard time finding the train schedule Munich-Fussen on-line. Is Fussen called something different in German?

So many questions, so little time! Thanks,K.

Hello Kathy. Fussen is spelled Fuessen. Transportation there is easy. The train from Munich to Fuessen is 2 hours. And a quick bus ride from Fuessen to the ticket office for Neuschwanstein. I recommend riding in a carriage pulled by horses up the hill toward the castle entrance.

If you use the German Rail query page, Füssen is "Fuessen Bahnhof".

Using a Eurail pass to go to Füssen is not cost effective, unless you already have a global pass, then I guess it doesn't matter (sigh, you've already wasted so much). You could use a Bayern-Ticket for €27 for 2 - 5 people and save a lot of money. The Bayern-Ticket covers the bus from Füssen Bahnhof to Hohenschwangau; I don't think the Eurail pass does, but oh, well, it is only a few more Euro.

Thanks for the info. Lee:
We have an 8 day Regional Germany/Austria pass, so we WILL be using this to travel on that day. Not a waste (sigh). A waste would be spending additional $$ on a train ride when we already have transportation. (sigh). Ron: Can we get tickets/reservations at either the TI or Euraide offices in Munich, or only via phone or on-line? And thanks for the info on the Fuessen spelling - was able to find the train connection on-line with no problem.

I am going to Neuschwanstein in August. I have booked my tickets online at their website. The website is in Rick's book, or you can probably just google it.

Very easy. They give you a date and time of entry and we pick up our tickets at the castle on the day!
Very easy and no worries about getting in!
