Do the Neuschwanstein guides allow visitors to photograph the interior of the castle?
No, they don't. At least, not when I went. Happy travels!
They do not allow photos in Neuschwanstein.
What makes Neuschwanstein special is its gorgeous setting. Leave yourself enough time to take photos outside and you'll have plenty of beautiful pics to take home. The interior is not really that special, I didn't feel any desire to take pictures.
Technically, no you are not supposed to take pictures inside. There were a few people breaking that rule though. They would hang behind the tour just a second or two and snap a picture. The tour guide was polite and didn't say anything. In Europe people generally follow the rules, so those that were breaking the rules just because they could get away with it stood out as very ugly tourists.
You will have so many opportunities for breathtaking photos outside though!
We were there just recently and one of the people in our tour group kept taking video, despite the instructions of the guide. She went unnoticed for a bit. When discovered, the tour guide threatened to call security. I, for one, felt embarrassed. (Sorry, it seemed like one more American who felt she could do as she pleased.) However, we were allowed to take photos from the windows, looking out, which is gorgeous.
Lamont,
My experience at Neuschwanstein was much the same as Karen described in the previous Post. The "official" Tour Guides were very clear that NO photos were to be taken of the interior of the Castle! However, they stated that photos could be taken from the Castle looking outside (I took several of the lake and mountains, as the view from the Castle is incredible). Given the number of souvenir stands I had to pass by when exiting the Castle, I assume they're trying to "encourage" visitors to purchase the official photo books?
As with my visit to the Borghese Gallery, I didn't even consider trying to "sneak" a photo as I wanted to respect their policies, and also being escorted out of the Castle by security guards would be a humiliating travel experience!
Cheers!
I had a similar experience as everyone else has in this post. For me, the exterior was much more fascinating. Cross the walking bridge and follow the trail up the mountain for tremendous views above the castle and teh land beyond. truly a birdseye view!
They allow you to take pictures "from the windows" to get the scenery outside, but not aiming your camera at anything inside.
I took pictures outside, and bought postcards of the interior. That was predigital photography for me, but the postcards look great next to my pictures in the albums.
It's a beautiful setting...you will enjoy.
Terry
Visit the castle then purchase the booklet with pictures and descriptions of what you are seeing from the gift shop. Very informative and well worth the money.
You can take pictures around the outside but the inside is no photos at both Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein.
Thanks for all of the great info - I'll concentrate on photographing the exterior. Some of the photos posted on the internet show the castle half-covered in scaffolding. Does anyone know if the castle exterior is still being renovated?
Just returned! Yes, the scaffolding on one side remains. But you only see it from the footbridge behind the castle. And it's really no big deal.
As for the interior, I found it spectacular and was disappointed not to be able to photograph it. BUT I bought a bookket of postcards and they look great. (Better lighting than I would have had.) In retrospect, the 'no photography' rule makes the most sense anyway. That way, you don't have photobugs like me holding up all of the others on tour.
