I expect to arrive in Hohenschwangau (via public transport) in the late afternoon one day, spend the evening there and tour Neuschwanstein castle the next AM. Once finished there, I'm thinking of taking a bus to Fuessen to pick up a rental car for a day. I'll have 24 hours or so (must leave Fuessen by 1 PM the next day) and hope to see WeissKirche, Linderhof and Oberamergau in that span, spending the night in Oberamergau. Is this feasible? If not, what should I sacrifice?
Thanks all. Arn, I had wanted to get to Ettal as well, so your recommendation will make me try a bit harder to work it in as well.
Looking at the map more closely, I'm wondering if it makes sense to make a sort of circuit route over the day I have the car...starting midday in Fuessen, heading north east on Rt. 17 to STeingaden and the Weisskirche, then over to Rt. 23 south to Oberamergau. The next AM, head to Kloster Ettal and then Linderhoff and return to Fuessen via Austria, rather than repeating the same trip back to Fuessen via Oberamergau. Would I see somewhat different scenery? Any downside to the route from LInderhof to Fuessen via Austria?
Don't know about the other two, but an hour and a half ought to do Oberamergau.
Yes, this is doable. Linderhof is not nearly as large as Ludwig's other creations, and does not take long to tour. Maybe try to do this first thing in the morning, so it won't be as crowded. Oberammergau is also a small town, and as noted, can be seen in a couple hours, as long as you plan to visit only a sampling of the shops selling carved wood items, rather than trying to see every one of them. Same applies to the many frescoed houses ... you can get a good sample with an hour's walk around the town. All three places are nearby geographically ... with the convenience of a car, you should have no problems at all.
I believe it is doable. I would also suggest adding Ettal if possible. It is a beautiful cathedral with a great history, Dietrich Bonhoffer lived there during a portion of WW2. Next door to Oberamergau and only takes 30-40 minutes to tour.
Hi Melissa, Have you checked on whether you can get a rental car in Fuessen yet? Where are you coming from before Fuessen and where are you heading to after Fuessen? Just a suggestion... Train to Garmisch, pick up the car here (near the train station) and drive to Hohenschwangau. On your short drive (about an hour) to Hohenschwangau, stop for the tour of Linderhof. You'll be passing it anyway. Next AM tour Neuschwanstein, see the Wieskirche and head over to Oberammergau. Next AM drive the 20 min. or so to Garmisch with a stop at Ettal (you'll be passing it anyway) and drop the car in Garmisch and train to your next destination. Paul
Thanks for the suggestions Paul. I have checked on a car in Fuessen, in fact I've already booked it through Priceline here, though I suppose I could cancel, if a more sensible alternative arises. Oddly, when I checked several european car rental companies, none showed cars in Fuessen, but Priceline offered one up for a reasonable price.
The rental agency appears to be about 7 blocks from the train station. To put my whole plan in perspective, I'll be arriving in Germany mostly to visit friends in the Mainz/Rhineland area. But I plan to give them a break for 5 days or so, taking the train from Mainz to Munich, spending a few days there, then arriving via train and bus in Fuessen/Hohenschwangau. That afternoon, I've booked a paragliding tour over Neuschwanstein. If I survive, I'll spend the night in Hohenschwangau, tour the castle in the AM and bus it back to Fuessen to pick up the car. When I finish my 24 hour mini-tour of the area, I'll take the train from Fuessen back to Mainz, for another week visiting and touring the vineyards and castles!
