the best way to get to the castle from munich ?
also is there a luge near enough to do in same day taking public transport ?
There are regional trains every hour from Munich to Füssen. They take about 2 hours. You can make the round trip for €28 total, for up to five people, with a Bayern-Ticket. That also covers the bus from Füssen to Hohenschwangau. On weekends you can take any train. On weekdays, the Bayern-Ticket is only valid after 9 AM, but the last train before 9 is only to Geltendorf at 9, so a local ticket to Geltendorf and a Bayern-Ticket will cover you.
I'm not sure how to get to the luge, but with two castles and a whole town to see, I wouldn't bother.
Hi karen,
The luge ride (Sommerrodelbahn) is at Tegelberg, about a mile or so from Neuschwanstein. There's also a cable car ride there also. Not sure how to get there by public transportation. The luge ride itself only takes about 5 minutes or so from bottom, to top, and then "luging" back down.

Do allow enough time to see not only Neuschwanstein, but Hohenschwangau castle "next door". This was Ludwig's boyhood home. Excellent tour in my opinion.

thanks for the info...is Fussen worth an overnight then, rather than a day trip from Munich if we want to visit both castles and see the town? If so could you recommend an economical place to stay ? I have 3 full days in Munich but could change that for an extra day in Fussen...
thanks a bunch ! :)
Hi Karen,
I'd spend a night in Fuessen. We stayed in Fuessen in '01 and again in '03 and found it to be a very nice old town. We stayed both times and can recommend the Hotel zum Hechten.

The luge (and gondola) are reachable by a very easy trail that runs through a nice wooded area from the castles. There are signs the whole way. Make sure you check the hours of the luge, as when we were there it was only open for a few hours in the afternoon.
I'm 61 yrs old and one of my favorite memories is my luge ride at 60. It is my favorite photo of me and my profile photo on Facebook. I would take a luge ride any chance I could get one.
Mike's Bike Tours based in Munich does a day trip to Neuschwanstein that includes a stop at Tegelburg for a bike ride, optional swim, lunch and time to do the luge. The day I went, some college students skipped the bike ride to go tandem hang gliding. Once at Neuschwanstein, you hike up the gorge to the castle - this part is strenuous, but fun. It was a great day. It was mostly college students when I went, but my 11 year old son and I felt welcome.
Unless you can't get enough souvenir stands, there's no reason to spend the night in Fuessen if you're staying in Munich. Depending on how much walking you can tolerate, you can even walk from Fuessen to the castles.
If you don't have a car try a one day bus tour. although it is spendier than going independent, it gets you to two castles with no worry about parking or traffic and the bus driving gives you tons of history during the comfy drive. you can book a tour at the train station in Munich at EurAid near track 19 in the train station. It is worth it.
