The train ride from Munich to Füssen is about 2.5-3 hours. Relatively easy, but a long day. I have not taken a tour from Munich, but it takes considerably less than 3 hours to drive. The advantage of a tour would be that you would get there sooner, and your entrance time would be arranged in advanced.

Elise, Yes, it is absolutely possible to get to the Castles by public transportation. That involves travelling by train from Munich to Füssen, and then a short Bus ride to Hohenschwangau. If you do the trip on your own, you'll have to reserve your tour of the Castles. Visitors are assigned a specific time, and if you miss your appointment, I believe you'd have to buy another ticket. If you'd rather take an organized tour, I would highly recommend Radius Tours. Their office is in a back corner of the Munich train station. They also offer excellent Walking Tours in Munich. With the tour, you will also be travelling by pubic transportation, but they make all the arrangements, including the reservations for the Castle tour as well as train & bus tickets. The Guide provides a brief overview of the history and as I recall, tour members get a short time on Marienbrücke (St. Mary's Bridge), which is a FANTASTIC location to get photos of the Castle. Happy travels!
