Does anyone know if Neuschwanstein Castle is open on Christmas Day? If not, which city in Germany or Italy is best to spend Christmas Day? I would like to be in a city where some sights are open/there are things to do for travelers. Thanks!
Neuschwanstein is closed December 24th and 25th. Lots of things close down on Christmas eve and the first Christmas day. Most museums will be open on the 26th again. The churches will stay open of course. If you stay in Germany I would suggest staying in a bigger city like Munich over the holiday. There are several nice Christmas markets downtown that you can string together along with the churches and beer halls.
You could also go to the Bavarian National Museum on Prinzregentenstraße which is open on the 25th. Only in the months of November through January do they open their collection of nativity scenes which is the largest in the world. Bavarian National Museum - Krippen
The Bavarian State Opera will be putting on Verdi's La forza del Destino on December 25th as well if that interests you. Bayerische Staatsoper
"Neuschwanstein is closed December 24th and 25th." Neuschwanstein is also closed December 31 and Jan 1. Hohenschwangau is only closed on December 24. The schedules are at the bottom of this page.
