Take a tour from Munich to the castle or take train on our own? A tour is about 40 euros per person, and you still have to pay the admission to the castle. With a special fare three people can travel round trip to the castle for 29 euros. I don't mind paying the tour if it is worth it. If best to go on our own, what station do I need to get off for the castle?
You take the train to Füssen, which is the end of the rail line. I guess you don't have to get off there, but you'll have an early return to Munich if you don't. After you get off the train, there is a bus across the parking lot that leaves in 10-20 min and takes you to Hohenschwangau. Hohenschwangau is where the castles are. The ticket kiosk is just around the corner, about 100 yds, from the bus stop. You can read more about getting there on my web page.
You definitely do NOT need a tour from Munich. Yes, use the Bavarian Ticket for your train travels from Munich to the castle. It's super simple. If you don't feel like waiting on the bus to the castle, then jump in a taxi for the 8 minute drive. Also, purchase your timed entry tickets BEFORE you get to Neuschwanstein from their official website.
Don't mean to sound like a poor sport but the castle is a thing of beauty no doubt but IMHO the hoops one has to jump through to see it are not. Once at the castle you have to wait until your number is called. You're tour guide allows only select rooms to see.
I can't speak for the travel and price of everything but I visited Neuschwanstein a few years ago and you do not need a guide for it. Enjoy.
