As a first time visitor who is travelling by train and staying in Munich, is it better to tour the castle independently or by way of Radius Tours? We would like to visit the castles in one day.
Thank you.

Radius tours doesn't do any thing for you you can't do your self, but helps themselves to your money. You can do the castle tour by yourself in a day. See my wepage on going to the castles>.
Great information, Lee. Thanks.
Take the train from Munich to Fuessen. When you get off the train there is a medium sized area for buses and taxis to navigate. In this area is a big sign for HOHENSCHWANGAU - take this bus for about 15 minutes and it drops you right at the castle ticket office. Reserve your tickets ahead of time at the official reservation page:

It's as simple as cake. No need for tours. Actually the area is nice enough to spend a couple of nights if you have time.
I was ready for a tour by the time I got to this area and I chose Mike's Bike tours out of Munich to the castle. Absolutely loved it!!! We took a bus there and met our guide who is originally from South Africa - he was very funny and really good with info. We then got on bikes and biked around the lake below the castle, had lunch at the ski area, then hiked the back way up the gorge to the castle. Absolutely worth the money and a really great time. The castle was fabulous and I highly recommend doing this. I reserved my tour with Mikes Bikes over the internet and then paid when I arrived in Munich.
Sharon, on our last trip there, my family and I stayed in Munich and did a day trip to Fussen (by car). We spent a lot of time at both castles. I always like to walk to the Marienbrucke (bridge) and continue past it and on up the hill. This gives you a view of Nueschwanstein most people do not see. As you know, you can walk, ride a bus, or take a horse and buggy up to Ludwigs castle. We also walked around Fussen having dinner at a local cafe and then dessert at the Hotel Kurcafe.
Having been 4 times, I never tire of the view.
