Cameras are not allowed on castle tours so is there a safe place to store your camera equipment while touring the castles or should I carry it under my coat?
Thank you.

I've never had my luggage with me at Neuschwanstein, but I understand from communication with the TI office that there are lockers (Schliessfächer) or a check room (Garderobe) at the castle. When I went through, I just kept my camera in my coat pocket. We took pictures outside the castle, but not inside.
Thanks, Lee. My camera will not fit in my pocket, but maybe I'll just try to keep it under my coat. I don't know that I feel secure about leaving it in a locker or check.
I carried mine in my purse, no problems. But I guess it depends on how big your purse and camera are!
I don't remember storing my camera, it doesn't fit in my pocket, so I must have carried it with me. Unless the rules have changed, it's not that you can't have a camera, it's that you can't use it. I don't recall any lockers outside the castle, and you exit the castle from a different door than you enter, so I doubt the lockers are located within the castle. They must be somewhere on the bottom of the hill.
Thank you, everybody. I also have a DSLR and will probably keep it around my neck.
you don't need to store your camera - keep it around is ok. they just don't want you to take pic of the inside, but if you sneak a pic of the outside from the windows is fine, actually pretty good scene of the lake and fields from the top windows.
Sharon,
My experience at Neuschwanstein is similar to that mentioned by James. Tours inside the Castle are conducted by the "official" Tour Guides, and they make it VERY clear that photos INSIDE the Castle are not permitted! However, I found that photos taken from inside the Castle and looking outwards are permitted (it's unfortunate that we can't post photos here, or I could provide an example).
I carried a dSLR in plain view during the tour, and there didn't seem to be a problem with that, nor was I asked to check it. Of course, I was always in view of the Guide, so "sneaking" a photo would not have been a good idea!
It's probably not a coincidence that visitors are ushered past about three souvenir stands on the way out of the Castle, with an abundance of glossy photo books for sale.
Cheers!
As others said, you can have your camera, and even take pictures looking out the windows. Lockers are available in the area by the courtyard where you enter for your tour. The lockers require a small deposit that is refundable when you return the key.
I think there is a distinction between a locker (Schliessfach) and a check room (Garderobe). I've left things in Schliessfächer, and the money was not refunded. When it was, they have always called it a Garderobe.
