We are headed for Holland in April. Love to read Novels from the country we will be visiting. Any suggestions? Non-Fiction also acceptable but I find fiction sets the scene and tone best...
Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates. One of my favorite books!
I really enjoyed Girl in Hyacinth Blue by Susan Vreeland.
The Girl with the Pearl Earring
Herman Koch: The Dinner http://www.amazon.com/The-Dinner-Herman-Koch/dp/0770437850
Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank
Not a novel, but WWII nonfiction: Orange Blood, Silver Wings: The Untold Story of the Dutch Resistance During Market-Garden
Thanks to each of you... wonderful variety...Audrey and I will tackle a couple each..Our preparations before we travel are a big part of the reason we love it so much...this year, it is getting us through the gloomy weather months...Thanks again!
Another WWII non-fiction that may be of interest is "Quiet Heroes" by Andre Stein. Not a novel but 7 true stories of the rescue of Jews by Dutch citizens in Nazi-occupied Holland. Most of the stories are situated in the northern part of the country and the citizens went to great danger and were very creative in their methods to keep those Jews safe. Not all were successful to the end unfortunately. This may not be the kind of book you would be interested in but a suggestion. Thanks Thomas for your suggestion. I had not heard of that book but will try to get a copy.
1. Anne Frank Remembered; The Story of the Woman Who Helped Hide the Frank family by Miep Gies w/ Alison Leslie Gold 2. Anne Frank: Beyond the Diary, a photographic remembrance by Ruud van der rol and Rian Verhoeven for the Anne Frank House
Did you check the Graffiti Wall under the Recommended Novels section for any suggestions?
Had nothing to do with Novels but if you are into WWII History. A visit to the Dutch resistance Museum in Amsterdam is a must. It is very well done for the size, it should be more of a major attraction in my opinion.
Tulip fever is a novel about, you guessed it: tulips.
I ordered Orange Blood, Silver Wings but would not recommend it unless you want a VERY detailed military assessment of the Market Garden operation.
