Hi, My boyfriend and I will be traveling in northwestern France from 11/8 to 11/15. We'll be arriving in Paris from London via Eurostar on 11/8, arriving at 11:17am. We plan on staying in Paris for 3.5 days (assuming we only have half a day on 11/8) and 4 nights. With the remaining 3 days, we want to travel to somewhere in Normandy, rent a car, explore a few D-Day sites (as time would allow), head over to Mont St. Michel, then stay one whole day exploring the Loire Valley. I can't seem to be able to consolidate an itinerary for this plan. I was originally considering the following plan: 1. 11/8 - 11/11: Paris 2. Paris to Caen or Rouen on 11/12 early morning, explore the D-Day sites on our own or with a tour, sleep in Normandy. 3. 11/13: To Amboise or Tours, via MSM. Sleep in Loire Valley 4. 11/14: See Chambord and Chenonceau (if time allows for both) 5. 11/15: Go directly to CDG to catch our 12:40pm flight back home. I checked the direct train time from Tours to CDG. The soonest we can arrive there is 10:55am. That seems a little rush to me for the 12:40pm flight. I don't want to transfer through Paris because it seems like the trains to and from Normandy or Loire Valley go to a different station than the RER. The transfer on the day of our return might be too stressful. My question is: how viable is my original plan? And will arriving at 10:55am to CDG for our flight home seem too rush? Is there an alternative route that could make this work? The order of which we visit these cities are not important. I just want to hit most of the places I listed above.
Thanks in advanced. Dee
You do need help but I'm not good at this sort of thing. Hopefully Ed or someone else who is good at itineraries will come along before this question gets too far down the list. I can tell you two things, however. The D-Day tours start around 8:30 am. Bayeaux is a better place to stay than Caen or Rouen. Second, arriving at the airport at 10:55 is way too late. You definitely need to be at the airport three hours early. CDG is about ten times the size of SFO. I think your plan would work if went to either Normandy and MSM or the Loire and then back to Paris the night before your flight..
Dee on 14th- Loire Chareaux. You can dio these two chateuax comfortably in a day. Probably have time to do a quickie at att least one more. A lot of organized tours from paris do three chateaux including these and still have time to get back to paris
Thank you for your responses!
Bets, I was definitely worry about not having enough time to catch our flight, so thanks for reaffirming that. I'm thinking perhaps I should go back to Paris or find a hotel near the airport for our last night. I'm also consider reversing the order: London - Normandy - Loire Valley - Paris. But that would mean that the day we arrive from London in Paris and head on to Normandy, we'll lose most of the day just on the road... Since daylight will be short in November, I'm a little hesitated for doing that... Do anyone have any feedback on that? Brian, thanks for letting me know that it's doable to visit at least 2 chateaus in one day. I definitely want to see those 2 and if I'll have time, I also want to visit Da Vinci's apartment.
This can easily be done. Because I have done it, although I have more time to relax and smell the roses than you, but I could of pack more into my day, we are young (25-30) and agile, not sure how old you are and how much you like to walk. I also have files for self guided walk maps that I made in Photoshop from the Ricksteves guidebooks, if you want it i can send it to you, just print them out on paper, easier to carry. 11/8 -11/11: Paris
- get a museum pass or advance tickets so you don't waste time in line. you can easily see most of the more important paris sites plus versailles in 4 days. 11/12 7:30am-10:30am: pre-book your rental car and bring a GPS. We booked ours at the Avis right inside the Gare de Rouen (Rouen train station.) you can easily walk around Rouen and visit all of its important sites in less than 2 hours. go back to the station, pick up your car, start driving to Caen or Bayeux. We arrived at Rouen at 10am, we checked in for our car, left the car at the station, walked around Rouen, went back to the station and started driving out of Rouen around 1:00pm. You really don't need to go inside any of the Rouen's sites, just observe the beautiful architecture from outside. So For you, you may want to arrive at Rouen early, and tour the area before anything opens, go back to the station around 10am when rental agencies are opened and start driving.
11/12 arrive by 12pm-ish: you can easily arrive in Bayeux or Caen under 2 hours. i'd cut out one of these cities, pick either Caen or Bayeux. I'd suggest visiting Bayeux only because it has the tapestry plus a smaller version of the Normandy D-day museum, while Caen just has a large overwhelming D-day museum. around 2pm-ish start driving towards some D-day sites starting from Arromanche, pick your sites wisely. here is a good site: http://www.normandie-chambres.co.uk/beaches.html it provides global positioning to sites that you need if you can't find it on your GPS. continue touring the sites with whatever time you have and start driving towards Mont-Saint-Michel, takes about another 2 hours to get there. check into a hotel here, tour the area at night. 11/13 get your butt up early again, tour the places on the island that was closed the night before, leave mont-saint michel by 11am. start driving towards the Loire Valley. We had some time, so we stopped at Fougères for lunch. You may want to skip this because of your tight schedule. It takes about 4 hours driving to get to Onzain, the city we stayed at. you can easily get to Onzain by 5pm, and check out Chaumont sur Loire down the street before it closes. Don't go inside the chateaux, it's not worth it. just tour the beautiful outside.
11/14: with your rental car, you can easily see in order (Chenonceau, Chambord, Cheverny, Amboise) intact You can prob add in Blois if you only spend about 2 hour-ish at each location. 11/15: return your car at Tours, I am sure they have early offs. We just gave our keys to the SNCF employee, we asked our hotel to call Avis for us and confirmed early off procedures. We took pictures of the car, the gas meters, and everything, they never charged us a dime more than promised. take the train go back to paris CDG. arriving at CDG 1 hours and 50 minutes before your flight is totally fine, but make sure you have your boarding passes printed already. not sure if you have checked luggage, we don't, so we always have time to spare. if you are the type like myself who enjoy constant moving about, you can do this. but if you want to relax and don't want to be rushed, you may want to cut out Rouen, go directly to Caen, rent a car there to have more time for the Beach. Someone else suggested you to reverse the itinerary may work also, since you are going there from London. good luck, have fun!
It would make more sense for you to reverse your itinerary. Since you're coming from London, are you going to be there prior to going to Paris? Is it possible that you could leave the night of the 7th and catch the train from London to Plymouth and then the Ferry from Plymouth to Roscoff and then continue the short distance to Normandy from there? It's a bit longer route, but it would get you there with the whole day to explore.
