We are looking at making a stop in Alsace area of France next December and were looking at staying in Riquewihr. How does it compare with staying in Colmar? Is it easy to get bus or train to Colmar from Riquewihr? Is there a better town/village to stay in? The place we are looking at staying requires a 7 day minimum during December? Will that be too long?

We stayed in Colmar and found it to be a great base for seeing villages of Alsace. We used a car rental for flexibility and to see as many villages as poss. but bus service on the "wine rd" is gd except for Sundays. The villages incl Riq. are lovely and interesting but I find no reason to base there. Colmar has museums, river walks great variety of resturants etc. and better bus options. 7 days in R is alot unless you are a plein artist.
We live not far from Riquewihr/Colmar/Strasbourg and have been there many times. Riquewihr is my favorite town, but really only needs one night. Colmar can be seen and done in a day/two nights. You can also easily stay in Colmar and see some of the wine towns as day trips. 7 days would be too much unless you're going over to Baden Baden or the Black Forrest, too.
Tina, I spent several days in Colmar on my trip last year, and it was a perfect "home base" for touring the towns in that area. As someone else mentioned, it has a nice assortment of restaurants and Hotels and a nice "smaller town" ambience. I really enjoyed my visit to the Unterlinden Museum!
