Need lodging help near Salzburg!

We are planning our trip to Germany and Austria with our 3 year old coming up in just a few weeks. We were thinking about just driving around and finding a place to stay wherever we are that afternoon...sort of care free. We discovered many guest houses and hotel do not have rooms available during the time we are traveling. So....we started making reservations, and spending much more than I had originally hoped.
We are having problems finding a place to stay for the 3 of us near Salzburg on a Sunday and Monday night. Anyone have any suggestions? We've checked Bad Reichenhall and a few surrounding villages.
Also, we've left one night without reservations for flexibility...a Friday, because we're not sure what are plans will be. Should we just bite the bullet and make reservations somewhere on that Friday night or do you think we'll be ok to find a place last minute? We'll be between Fussen and Salzburg. Much of Garmisch is booked...Any suggestions? Thanks to all!

Hi JR,

We stayed 3 times the last 4 years at the Pension Mayringerlehen in nearby Ramsau and just love it there. The owners, Sabine and Johann Grassl, are simply the friendliest people we've met on our travels. They have nice rooms, good buffet breakfast, great views, very convenient to Salzburg, Berchtesgaden, Konigsee and Bad Reichenhall plus goats, cows, chickens, guinea pigs, a llama and a horse.

Between Fuessen and Salzburg, if you're interested in a place close to Garmisch, we liked our 2 recent stays at the Pension Schwalbennestl in Mittenwald.

This is the time of year to travel without reservations. Hotels or Pensions that cater to tourists will have empty rooms and will give you a good last minute deal.

If you are paying more than you expected, I'm wondering if you are trying downtown hotels that normally cater to business travelers. This time of year is their peak. They are likely to be full and have higher prices (except on weekends).
