Need ideas for 1 day in Budapest

My husband is taking me to Vienna and Salzburg in late Nov. to celebrate my 50th birthday and our 30th wedding anniversary. I just found out that he has added a day trip (by train) to Budapest. We will definately be checking out the Christmas markets. What would anyone suggest for 1 day in Budapest.

Wow, 1 day in Budapest. That's hard, but if you want an overview I'd take a tour. Otherwise I'd probably recommend the Buda side primarily with the fisherman's bastion, St. Stephen's Basilica (great story from WWII)and Matthias Church, the Gellért Baths. On the Pest side there is the Vatzi (sp?) Utca (St.), the biggest shopping street in Budapest. I think a ride on the subway is fun since it is the oldest in Europe, but it might be harder to do that than to just take a bus tour. The History of the country and the city is very interesting and a tour would fill you in on all of that as well. Finally, depending on how you come in you should arrive at the Nyugati train station. Take a few minutes to look at it as it was built by Gustav Eiffel of the tower fame.
