need hotel at Mont St. Michel & bus information

At the end of Sept. I am taking train then bus from Paris to Mont St. Michel to arrive in the afternoon. I want to have supper and stay on the "island" that night, climb up to the abbey early the next morning before the crowds arrive, and then return to Paris in the afternoon. I am having trouble finding a room on the island. Most of the hotels that come up in my searches are on the mainland. If I were to stay on the mainland, I need more detailed information about transportation to the island early in the morning. Thanks, Carolyn

We've had mixed opinions here about this. Some feel sleeping on the island is worth the difficulty of booking one and the generally small rooms. Whereas others have felt okay about staying on the mainland, but most of them have rental cars. I've slept on the island and am glad I did, to me the romance of walking around at night with the lights on the walls was not to be missed. But it might just be me. . . . ¶ Hopefully you can book a room on the island, it will simplify the transportation thing for you. . . . ¶ I don't know the answer about transportation to the island early in the morning, when sleeping on the mainland and not having a rental car - I hope someone else does know this. If you don't get an answer to that question here, try the Mont St Michel discussion forum at Tripadvisors, where you are more likely to get an answer from a French person or other very experienced traveler to that part of France.
