Through some good fortune I have lucked my way into a free flight to Zurich. However, I have to use it on the weekend of Sept 17-19th or I lose it. So, basically, fly from Boston on Friday night, sleep in Switzerland on Sat and Sunday nights, fly home on Monday. So, a tight schedule, but worth the trouble considering the cost (free). After doing some research I decided that Appenzell would be my best bet. Only 2 hours by train from Zurich, great hiking, nice town, etc. I was also charmed by the hope of sleeping in Ebenalp. The problem - every hotel/hostel/b&b in Appenzell and Ebenalp are booked solid. Trip Adviser had 30 places in Appenzell - all booked. I'm currently working with Rick's guide, the Rough Guide, Lonely Planet and Trip Adviser and getting nowhere. Please help in one of the following two ways: 1. Suggest a way that I can see Appenzell and also get shelter. or 2. Suggest a location about 2 hours away from Zurich by train that I would enjoy spending the weekend in. I like mountains, lakes, hiking, biking, charming town centers, etc. Thanks!
How about Lucerne?? Bern is another close place but not as much to do as Lucerne. Is Interlachen too far away? Have a good weekend in Switzerland.
In 2 hours 28 minutes from Zurich airport, you could be in Kandersteg, a charming small town in the center of the Alps. Above the town is a beautiful lake, considered by the Swiss a national treasure. Great hiking around there, including up to a hut in an amazing position above the lake. There is a mountain hotel at the lake, or you could stay in Kandersteg itself. Try the Adler for a place in town. www.oeschinensee.ch for photos of the lake and info on hikes there. Google Fruendenhutte to see photos of the hut. For your second day, rent a bike at the train station and ride into the next valley, the Gasterntal, which is completely undeveloped apart from a guesthouse or two. The road in to the valley is restricted, and goes along a foaming cascade as the river pours down from one valley to the next. Google "biking Gasterntal" and you will probably find more information.
We actually stayed at hotel in Zurich and did Appenzell as a day trip. It is beautiful and well worth the train ride. Just don't spend the night there. It remains light until later in the evening. So, you would have a full day of hiking and activities. Check the train schedules for return trip to Zurich. If I remember correctly, there is one that is late. Have a wonderful trip!!
