I've unsuccessfully sought hotel reservations for October 3-6 in Luzern. We're travelling by train from Salzburg and will go on toward Trier, Germany after Switzerland. This is our first trip to Switzerland, and I've been reading all the postings and guide books.We would like to enjoy Luzern, but also go to the Lauterbrunnen valley,and Berner Oberland areas. Where could we stay outside of Luzern that makes good travel sense to spend a day in Luzern and return to hotel? What transportation is available, and how long would the trip take? Thanks so much. The more I read the less I know!

I don't know what hotels you tried, but I can heartily recommend Hotel Des Alpes in the center of old town (next to the Bridge) and less than 10 minutes walking from the train station. Rates are reasonable (approximately $200), location is key. Check out the site below for more info (and try the discount fares for even lower cost rooms).
