Hi all...I'm trying to do an itinerary for my sister and brother-in-law and am stuck on one part of it. I would like to get them from the Stuttgart area (actually Eschach)to Colmar, but I want to take them there via the deutsche uhrenstrasse with one night somewhere in the Black Forest. Any suggestions?
I'm not sure what is the big attraction of the Deutsche Uhrenstrasse. Sounds like just one more "road" contrived to attract tourists. Yes, cockoo clocks are made all over the Black Forest. Triberg is most noted.
Go south from Stuttgart to Ettingen im Gäu. Then on to Freudenstadt. Spend some time in Freudenstadt. From there go down the Kinzig through Alpirsbach to Hausach. The Schwarzwald openair museum is there if you are interested. South of Hausach, to Triberg, the Schwarzwaldbahn is a particularly scenic rail section, hanging on the hillside, with switchbacks, tunnels, and waterfalls. I think there is a cuckoo clock museum in Triberg. So spend the night in Triberg. From Triberg, go south to Donaueschingen, headwaters of the Danube. Take the train west from Donaueschingen via Neustadt/Titisee to Freiburg and across the Rhein to Colmar.
"The Mad Men of Germany certainly were a creative bunch, as there's at least a dozen of these, and they're all very ordinary, but the people keep asking." Foremost amongst these would be the Romantischestrasse. Pure marketing genius. By my count, there's also a Wine Road, Fairy Tale Road, Castle Road and Alpine Road. I didn't know about the Uhrenstrasse until reading this post.
Ah, but there is an Apfelwein Road too. Goes right through Hessen. Just made for all those lovers of Applewine.
Thanks all..yes they are driving. I haven't been to the Black Forest area since I was a child but I remember enjoying it very much. Not sure what the resistance is against cuckoo clocks, and yes, there are many routes, but my reasoning for taking them via the deutsche uhrenstrasse was so that there would be quaint little places to stop along the way. I just can't picture how it is. If I take them along the high road, I worry there will be lots of beautiful scenery, but nothing to stop at and poke around in, if you understand what I mean. My sister loves to shop. I'll keep researching. Thanks again.
