Need a place to stay in southern Spain...

Hi all,

I'm going to Spain in a week and a half and the only thing I don't have planned is where to stay in Algeciras (that is the best bet for going to Gibraltar and then hitching a ride on a train to Granada, right?). I'm looking for a cheaper place - it seems there are only expensive hotels around there. I suppose if worst came to worst, I could stay there. Also, anyone know about safety there?

Thanks a lot!

I haven't seen a lot of people from Spain on this forum, but you can sign up for a free account on couchsurfing.com and ask some locals.

I would not even contemplate the option of staying in Algeciras unless I'd exhausted all other possibilities. The city has all of the charm of a chemical processing plant, but without the cultural opportunities that a waste dump might offer. It is also on the other side of the bay from the "Rock", so unless you've a car, it's not really right next door anyway. Frankly, I'd look into spending the night in Tarifa, Barbate, or Conil and catching a bus towards Gibraltar. Half a day is more than sufficient for seeing all of Gibraltar, so you should be able to find a reasonable connection.

AS one who has stayed in Algeciras, I can agree with Adynata...there is no reason to stay there except (1) If you are catching a "cheap" ferry to Ceuta (Spanish Morroco) or to catch the day ferry to Gibraltar...(many day workers live in Algeciras and ride the ferry to work...very cheap...much cheaper than a hotel in Gib...however, back in the day, we slept in the gun positions that are ubiquitous on Gib...probably couldn't get away with that today.
