looking for a charming, 3 star near in the left bank area. am trying the academie hotel st. germain, does anyone have any recommendations? should i book directly or through a website? i find trip advisor confusing. thanks, Kim

I had a pleasant stay at Hotel Europe Saint Severin. It's in a fantastic location. Nothing fancy but it is clean with friendly staff and an adorable reception area cat. You can book directly through their website: http://www.hoteleurope.net

I have a great suggestion. I found this small group of hotels after weeks of research and have now stayed there five times. Try Hotel des Grands Hommes or Hotel du Pantheon. Both are right across the street from the Pantheon and the views are incredible. They are small, charming, excellent service, very close to Notre Dame, the Seine, the Sorbonne, two blocks to Luxembourg Gardens, etc. This is a wonderful area to base yourself!!

We've stayed several times at Hotel St Germain des Pres. It is just steps away from Les Deux Magots (and the church St. Germain des Pres, at 36 rue Bonaparte (intersection Blvd St. Germain, 6th Arr., phone 43 26 00 19). Very charming, has elevator and breakfast is included. Cary
