Upon arrival in Zurich from the U.S. where could a solo woman stay for cheap in a relaxing, scenic town, Switzerland or Italy fine. No more than 3 hours by train.

For your journey from Zurich to Florence, it's generally straight south. On the high-speed trains you don't have a lot of stops. Some cities along the way could be Bern, Spiez, Brig and Dommodossola. Bern might be too close to Zurich. Off the main path a bit with good connections to get back on your high-speed routing could be Interlaken and Zermatt. Some high-speed routings will take you through Lugano so that's a nice option as well. You can see these routings on www.sbb.ch/en/index.htm (Swiss train website).

Kandersteg is a lovely small town surrounded by mountains right on the main line south from Bern to Milan. It is 2.5 to 3 hours from the airport, and some of the routes have only one change from the airport to Kandersteg (usually in Spiez). I have stayed there solo and been very comfortable.
