National Strike in France today

September 23 has a planned national strike. Trains and bus services (and perhaps services I am not aware of) might be interrupted.

A new pension law being refuted by these workers. I guess the French don't read papers? For if they did they'd now all too well that pensions net worths have dropped over the last 10+ years.

FYI, the French retirement fund is not tied to investments, but like the US Social Security system depends on deposits into a fund. The workers are particularly against people with physically demanding jobs, who often began at age 16 or 18, having to work longer. These workers reached the 40-year requirement for full benefits (yes, forty years) long before they reach sixty, much less sixty-two. Furthermore, their age of death is younger than the white-collar workers. So the strike is to get some concessions into the law. It can be inconvenient but that's how it's done in France. Many are inconvenienced but majority of the French voters polled are in favor of social actions.

I was trying to leave Paris when workers first went on strike Sept 7th. They shut down the RER line to GDC and many flights were delayed. It was a mess then. Thank god for the AirFrance Buses!
