advice for places to stay in the Algarve region in May? would like a reasonably priced pension near the beach. thanks. we hope to stay for 5 days and day trip around the area.

If you'll have a car, I'd recommend Das Dunas in Carrapateira (Tlf. +351 282 973 118). If, however, you are looking to be closer to the tourist strip on the southern coast, I'd try Hostal Tavira in Tavira. (Sorry, no telephone). Frankly, if you stay away from Faro and Lagos, you'll find that most any town will have a reasonably priced hostal close to a gorgeous beach. Portugal is just nice that way. Enjoy your trip.

We stayed in one of the apartment rooms in Pension a Mare in Salema, Portugal and thought it was great! The room had an amazing view of the ocean--website: http://www.algarve.co.uk/

Definitely check out Rick's suggestions. We stayed in the Hotel Residencial Salema, which isn't one of his favorites, but we really enjoyed it. Had a nice little breakfast and great ocean views. Also, there are locals everywhere offering great rooms in their homes for unbelievable prices.
