Im going on my bucketlist trip with my 17yr old daughter. Driving all over Germany 12 days. Then 5 day cruise out of Barcelona and staying in Barcelona 3 days after cruising. These are my general plans. Let me know it it sounds OK and any great places to visit on the way. Input on hotel ion is also appreciated. Arrive FRA drive to Waldeck stay at Schloss Waldeck 2 nights. Rothenburg 2 nights at Hotel Spitzweg Munich 2 nights @ Hotel Falkensturm visit Dachau Drive by Zugspitze/obbergamerau the stay in Schwangua 1 night Hotel SchossLisl I have an open night here driving to Heidelberg (not sure where to stay.) In Heidelberg stay 1 night Hollander Hof 2 nights Bacharach- Hotel Am Markt ( plan on Rhine cruise) and gondola ride in Rudesheim. NH Frankfurt Airport before leaving for Barcelona. Staying at Hotel Atlantis in Barcelona
Again, Any input is appreciated. Thanks!
Why are you staying out in the boonies by the Frankfurt airport for 3 nights, 2 at the beginning and one at the end? There will be nothing at all to do out there. Why not stay in the city? Frankfurt is a very historic city with lots to see and do.
You didn't provide approximate dates for your travel, but this sounds, in my opinion, a bit hectic with too much driving around. I generally pick one or two must-see things, then build a reasonable (and flexible) itinerary around those destinations. For example, I would only stay 1 night in Rothenburg and add a night in Munich. I've found Munich to be a great base to travel from due to the excellent rail and highway connections. This provides some flexibility if the weather changes (as it did for me on my last trip back in October 2010). When a cold front moved in earlier than predicted, I was able to flip-flop my plans and hit some "indoor" things (BMW museum and some others) on the rainy day and do my hiking in the mountains the following day. I travel quite a bit for work, and I've found over the years that I'd much rather be making memories in a new place then spending a lot of time in a car/train/plane rushing to make it to my "next" destination. I enjoy Rothenburg, so i think you will find enough to do and see to enjoy your two nights there. But two nights in Munich is not enough (esp if one day is Dachau). I would be inclined to cut one day off Frankfurt and add to Munich, or something like Bamberg. On your way to Heidelberg- I suggest Nuremburg . I think your plan is doable, a little rushed, try and use your driving time between overnights to smell the roses along the way
I am traveling in May. I know I will never get a chance to go back to Germany, so I am trying to fit in as much as possible. Although I am staying 2 nights in Rothenburg I dont plan on getting there till later in the day, so I plan on relaxing the first night and do the night watchman tour the 2nd night. Then go to Dachau on my way to Munich. I usually prefer quaint towns rather than big cities. But I am looking forward to the Marienplatz/virtual market & Hofbrauhaus. Other than that I am not sure what else to do in Munich. Im not a big museum person. Is the Hotel Falkensturm in a good location? I heard that some areas of the city can be a bit seedy. Also, In Bacharach I am considering changing my hotel to Hotel Kranenturm instead of Am Markt. Is Kranenturm close enough to walk to the Markt area? Which would you pick? Thanks again for all your advice

I can't offer any input as to your plans, but you might well be on the same Nightwatchman's Tour that my friends and I are on. We'll be there on 5/16. However, I'm skipping Dachau.
Seeing the Anne Frank House & the Dutch Resistance Museum in Amsterdam was enough for me. I don't really have to be convinced that the Nazis were bad. Joan
Im just missing you, Ill be the May 13-15. I was planning the tour May 14. Is there a specific tour that is better than others? Do I have to make reservations?
Is Kranenturm close enough to walk to the Markt area? Based on my several journeys there I would say anything in Bacharach is walking distance to everything else. Unless, like some left coasters I know, you think walking across the street is too far. ;-)
