I am an avid art lover and want to see the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain but its kind of an awkward town to stop in. I will be traveling from either Paris or Loire Valley and going to Madrid after Bilbao using a Global Rail pass. Any suggestions for a time efficient way to do this part of my trip? I'll be traveling in September and right now have a pretty open itinerary so I can leave/arrive whenever is most convenient. I don't know if the town is worth an overnight stay or not either. Anything would be a big help.
Can't advise on Bilbao but if you get anywhere near Venice, don't miss the Peggy Guggenheim museum. We really enjoyed this museum.
Melissa, we spent 4 days in Bilbao a few years ago for a conference of city and regional planners and apart from the Guggenheim (of which I have about 200 photos!) Bilbao has little to interest the average tourist. My opinion only, you understand.
Head to San Sebastian for an overnight stay and a visit, then hit the Guggenheim in Bilbao before heading to Madrid. Norma's correct....there's not much else there.
Agree, San Sebastian is the place to stay and Bilbao is a short and easy bus ride away. You can see details and pictures of our trip at:

Thanks for the suggestions. I will change my overnighter to San Sebastian. I did some research and that town seems really charming.
