There are so many music (concert) choices for Vienna and Salzburg! We want to do one in each city, but I'm overwhelmed by the choices. We'll be in Vienna in August and Salzburg in September (after our E. European tour). Sharing your experience and hearing recommendations is appreciated.

During August and September, the upper-tier musical ensembles (like the Vienna Philharmonic, the Staatsoper and Volksoper, the Boy's Choir) usually go on holiday. Most of your remaining options are the smaller ensembles that cater to the tourist crowds. Although their performances are of an acceptable standard, if you are a serious music lover, you may quickly tire of the rather limited repetoire of these groups- you're bound to hear "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik", and "The Four Seasons", again and again. There probably isn't too much to distinguish one group from another, so take your pick.
