Have read that Paris museums are free on the first Sunday of each month-which is great since that is the day after we arrive-BUT does that mean they will be swamped ? And if so, what is the best time to visit them that day?. Only in Paris 3 full days.
It is true that most of the large museums are free on the first Sunday. Typically, I try to go early as close to opening as possible. By noon things can get messy.
2 hours before closing can be good as well. One thing is to stay away when there is a new exhibit.
Remember too - if you will only be there a few days, many museums are closed on Monday (Musee d'Orsay) whereas the Louvre will be closed on Tuesday.
Most museums have their own websites now - and offer an option in English (look for the British flag).
NO, do not go on free Sunday. It is not worth it, sell a litre of blood to raise the money to pay for admmission but do not go on free Sunday.
I did this once, by accident, I thought that waiting in line for 2 hours at the Louvre was normal, oh my goodness, the swamp inside was worse then the baking heat of the line in the sun across the courtyard...
Never again. Don't do it.
PS Kids are free anyways , so " free Sunday" is only saving you 8 or 9 euros. ( I thought I read in another thread that it is just you and one child, I may be wrong on this so sorry )
On Free sunday go to the Eiffel Tower, maybe the crush at the museum will keep the horrendus lines down there, LOL, good luck on that.. LOL
If you insist on going to Musuems on free day at least go first thing, when it opens, actaully before it opens.

Hi Kathy,
Maybe you can find answers at the above link which is "Tom's Guide to Paris". If you still have a question or two, go to "Contact Me" at the bottom of Tom's Guide home page - and send Tom an email.
... bon voyage! ...P
I went to the Louve on the first Sunday and while it did not take me that long to get in, the crowds inside were horrible. I had Rick's Louve tour all ready to go on my mp3 player and did not even attempt to take the tour as there were too many people inside to allow for one to walk around. One museum close by to the Louve, L'Orangerie, is actually worth going to on Free Sunday. They limit the number of people who can be in the museum at any one time, so even on that Sunday, once you get in you can really enjoy the museum. Do not sit on the grass outside while you wait- they patrol it constantly and do not allow for people to sit on the grass! The Museum Pass is the best way to go as you do not have to wait in lines to get in. In that case, do not buy the pass for the first Sunday, as you will still be battling huge crowds in most museums.
