I was told that museums and other tourist attractions in Paris are all closed on Mondays. Is this true? If so, what do you recommend doing for the day?
Not all of the museums are closed on Mondays (e.g. the Louvre is open Mondays and closed Tuesdays) so check each one of interest on the websites. The Tour Eiffel, the Arc de Triomphe, boat rides on the Seine, a visit to any of the wonderful parks, the Sacré Coeur, Notre Dame, A boat ride on the Canal St.Martin, St. Denis Cathedral where the tombs of Kings of France can be seen, Chateau Malmaison (home of Empress Josephine) are all things you can do on a Monday, as well as just walk and sit at a café and watch the world go by.
Be careful with " I was told" advice, often given by those whose total experience was a 2 night stop in Paris( or where ever) on a bus tour ,, 5 years ago..
Paris does not close most of its tourist attractions on any day,, but yes, some museums close either monday or tuesday,, but since there is so much to see or do it won't leave you with nothing else to do!
Guide books are a great help,, but you know, you can also google search for most tourist sites,, they usually have a great website, and in english too( look for UK flag or "english" icon to click on) .
Enjoy your mondays,, and any day, in Paris!
Also take a look at the Paris Museum Pass website. You can download the brochure, a useful reference for Paris, whether you buy the Pass or not. It lists all the sites covered, and there aren't many major sites that aren't, with their days and hours, and their websites, plus a brief description.
The Louvre is often more crowded on Monday because some of other major museums, notably the Orsay, are closed.
Here is the museum site I've been studying to roughly plan my museum going in Paris. I hope it's an accurate one. Anyone else use it?
Janet - here's another helpful site -- http://www.parisnotes.com/museums/parismuseums.html
Ruth - take a look at the Pass website

It seems to be much more user-friendly. I also recommend downloading the booklet. The one you get with the pass is teeny tiny, good for carrying in a pocket, hard to read without a magnifying glass.
There are some excellent sights that aren't included - 2 come to mind immediately: the Marmottan Museum (not covered by the pass) and the Carnavalet Museum (free).
