museums and personal items

Are you allowed to carry a jacket or a small purse or RS size daypack into the Louvre, or must everything be checked? Are there general rules on this for the museums of Paris, or is it like Italy where every location is different?

daypacks,, that look like backpacks,, will asked to be checked,, now,, I have seen some people get in with them, especially if they look more like a purse and less like a back pack.. Never wear it on your back if trying to get it in,, sling it under your arm like a purse.. A purse is fine, I always carry mine in and have never had a problem in any museum in Paris,, although once in Italy at a small museum that had the "Ice Man" in it,, we had to check even purses.

I was happy to get that load off my back while I wandered through the museum. Most museums simply don't want that bulging bag behind you bumping into something extremely valuable. Most museums in Paris had me check the backpack, but I was able to put everything I wanted with me (valuables, kleenex, etc) into a canvas tote.
