I have heard that a large part of the museum is closed for renovation this year. I could'nt find anything on their web site about this -- is there any truth in this?
I found this quote on their website:
"From November 2009 to March 2011, the museum will be carrying out major renovation work leading to the closure of level 5.
The collections are displayed in new, specially redesigned rooms."
Check out their website where they will be updating what can bee seen and where.

Hope this helps.
I was poking around there a couple of days ago and saw some annotations that what you say is true. Keep looking, it's almost a daily updated kind of thing with a diagram. Can't remember if I was reading French or English, so it might not show up in one language or the other -- not sure why that is on some sites.
Edit: Do what Karen said, then click "Museum Floorplans" on the left.
I can tell you that the de Young Museum in San Francisco is exhibiting "100 Masterpieces from the Musee d'Orsay" from May to September. So even if the d'Orsay is open there's going to be a lot missing.
Tom is correct. Here's a link to the details of the exhibit that will be at the De Young in SF

That said, the Musee d'Orsay is a beautiful building and the sculpture collection on the first couple of floors is wonderful. It appears from their website that they will have other collections available in other areas. As long as you are aware that some of their more famous pieces will be missing, so you are not disappointed when you get there, it's still well worth the visit, in my opinion.
