My wife and I have 3 nights in Murren then 2 nights with no particular destination in mind, except to work our way towards Vareena on Lake Como. Here we will have 3-4 nights and then 3 more in cinqua Terre. My question is: Anyone have any great ideas for those two free nights after Murren? We prefer the off the beaten track, small village, swiss feel, type settings, a castle would be fun or a winery, river rafting?, or?? Want to stay away from the large cities. Is Lugano large?? Some sites that interest me are Engleberg, the dolomites, brienz Stressa, leukerbad, but we are open for anything. appreciate any help or ideas you can give.
We will be traveling via train so if any one knows the best way to get from Lauterbrunnen to Vareena with a good spot in-between that would be fantastic.
Jay, I'm assuming you mean Varenna on Lago di Como? Rather than stop somewhere along the way for two nights, I'd suggest going straight to Varenna and taking a few days trips to explore the lake. It will likely take you the better part of a day to travel from Mürren to Varenna, so you may not have as much time as anticipated to explore another location. Happy travels!
Thanks Ken Your link is just what I was looking for. thanks for the help
Thanks Ken You are probably right as the last thing I want to do is spend to much time packing and unpacking. Can you give any help on how to take the train from Interlaken to Varenna. Should I buy a pass. Is there a 2 for 1 pass in September? Should I prepay from here or wait till I get to Zurich? Should I go through spiez and on to lugano then bus to mennoggio or would you recommend an alternative route. You have been so very helpful in so many different posts. Thank you very much for taking your time to help others One other question: We will be flying out of Milan on the 9th of Oct.so we will be leaving the Cinqua Terre on the 8th and try to find a place to stay for one night. Do you think we should book a room or just wing it?? Any affordable recommendations?
thanks again Ken Jay
Jay, To begin with, you'll have to get from Mürren to Interlaken Ost, via the small mountain railway to Grütschalp and then Cable Car to Lauterbrunnen. From there you'll take the small Berner Oberland train to Interlaken Ost (about 22 minutes). Travel times from Interlaken Ost to Varenna vary quite a bit, and will depend on which departure time you choose. Although it means a VERY early departure from Mürren, the one that I'd probably use is a departure from Interlaken Ost at 08:00, arriving Varenna at 13:23 (time 5H:23M, 5 changes, Bus on one portion, reservations compulsory on one leg). I'd choose that as it's about the shortest trip and arrive in Varenna at a good time to check-in to the Hotel and get "acclimatized" to the new location. If you don't mind longer travel times, you could use a later departure with fewer changes. I used the Swiss Rail website to research the trips, rather than the German Rail site. I'm sure the times will be precise, as with anything else in Switzerland. The website has a clever feature that will even read the route to you if you wish (it's a "robot" voice, but still useful). When you research your travel routes, you might print the page and pack it along so that you can show the station agent which trip you want to buy tickets for. If you're firmly decided on your departure times, you could certainly buy all your tickets in Zürich or for the trip from Mürren to Varenna when you arrive at Interlaken Ost. Happy travels!
Hi Jay I traveled from Interlaken Ost to Varenna in October on the train and took no buses on that run.Train from Interlaken to Milan and change train to Varenna,it is about a 90 minute layover in Milan.Get off train and walk down hill about half mile to hotels and marina with ferry boats. We stayed at Hotel Olivedo right on the waterfront and rented the Villa from Laura, second time there and loved it.
