Here is our itinerary starting in Zurich and leaving from Milan. 4 days in murren, 3 in L. Marriore, and 3 in the Cinqua terra region. Any suggestions or thoughts??
Leaving late sept to october 12.
Jay, I am not sure what you are asking. Lodging recommendations, which town or village, transportation optioins?
Yes..... to all that you mentioned.
Not knowing my way around I especially need lodging recommendations and sites to see that should not be missed
Jay, I just put a last minute Swiss itinerary together without the RS book or my notes, both of which I forgot in the States. I used every thread on this website I could find and dived into the archives. I also studied the websites of every place we are going. In fact, after studying the Swiss tourism websites, I adjustrd the number of days we'll be in Murren. Finally for hotels, I went to Tripadvisor. Since filth isn't an issue in Switzerland, I looked for hotels in my price range that appeared quiet, which is my preference over being in the middle of the city.
Your spread of days looks good. I'm sure you'll get good suggestions from those who have already been to these places.
Jay, It would help to have some idea on which part of Lago Maggiore you're considering? I'd suggest staying in Stresa for a few days, as it's an incredibly beautiful city and there's lots to keep busy with for three days. Here's a route you could consider.... > TO LAGO MAGGIORE. Depart Interlaken Ost at 13:29, arrive Stresa at 15:38 (time 2H:09M, 1 change, reservations compulsory on second leg). Unfortunately, there are no departures between 08:00 & 13:29. That's a reasonably good time though as you'll have time for a leisurely breakfast in Mürren and Hotel rooms will be serviced in Stresa. In Stresa you could tour the Borromeo Islands one day, take a day trip to Locarno (CH) on the scenic Cento Valli Railway another day (returning by boat in the late afternoon) and perhaps take the lift up Mt. Mottarone if you have time. While in Locarno, you can tour the impressive Santuario della Madonna del Sasso Franciscan Monastery, take the Cable Car to Cardada and enjoy a fine meal or a "cool one" on the patio of the restaurant which overlooks the town and lake. You may have a view of Paragliders sailing by the balcony. There's also a small Casino in Locarno (close to the docks), but I've never tried it. If you want to see some luxury items, check out the windows of the Bucherer store, as they'll likely have a few $10,000 Rolex Watches displayed. They may also have a few Vertu Cellphones which range from ~$5,000 to $310,000. Locarno is a VERY posh city! Be sure you don't miss the boat back to Stresa! > TO CINQUE TERRE. Depart Stresa at 09:39, arrive Monterosso at 15:02 (time 5H:23M, 1 change at Milano Centrale, reservations compulsory). You didn't say which of the C.T. towns you were staying in, so I used Monterosso in the search. Cheers!
