Murren to Interlaken

I have booked a hotel in Murren for 5 nights the first week of September. On the last 2 mornings my husband is running the Jungfrau Marathon and the starting point is in Interlaken. Are we too far away from Interlaken? Should I be looking at something closer for the last 2 nights?

Interlaken is nearby, it's 45 minutes away via cable car and train. Unless the marathon starts very early in the morning before the trains are running staying Murren the entire time will work. http://rail.ch

What time does your husband have to be in Interlaken to warm-up and get ready to run? According to current schedules, the first train down to Grutshalp departs at 6:06am. The trip to Interlaken Ost will take 48 minutes. He will be at the Interlaken Ost train station at 6:54am. Is this enough time?

The marathon starts at 9am and he is hoping to be there by 7:30am or 8am at the latest.
Michael, Thank you for the link to the train schedule. That's very helpful.

You don't really provide enough information to be able to say. However, according to the timetable accessible from this page, the first train that meets the bus that meets the first cablecar from Murren arrives at 6:54 AM. I hope that helps you figure it out.

Adam, why do you post a link to the bus route from Stechelberg? They are coming from Mürren and do not need to go that way. They can take the train and cable car directly down to Lauterbrunnen to get to Interlaken. You are confusing things.

Yvonne, Just to clarify, there are two routes that you can use to travel from Mürren to Interlaken. The most direct method is to take the small mountain railway from Mürren to Grütschalp, Cable Car to Lauterbrunnen and then regional train to Interlaken Ost. The Cable Car terminal is across the street from the rail station. The alternate method is to take the Cable Car from Mürren to Stechelberg (via Gimmelwald) and then board the Post Bus (bright yellow, you can't miss it) for the trip to Lauterbrunnen. The Bus stops at the station. Each method operates with typical Swiss efficiency, and as I recall there isn't much difference in time. When you buy a ticket in Mürren (or wherever) it will include all modes of transport for the route you choose. You'll need to research the route from Interlaken Ost to the area where your husband's race starts. My memory is a bit "foggy" on the layout of Interlaken. Note that there are two stations in Interlaken, East and West. Happy travels!

Sasha and Ken (and Yvonne): first of all the timetable available on the page I link to (no direct link possible) shows both routes. Did you read it? According to that timetable the first train does not leave Murren until 9 AM. So the earliest way to Interlaken is the cablecar-post-bus-train route. Schedules change, so maybe you will find that things are different when you get there, I suppose.

Yes I read it. You are confused ( and confusing Yvonne with wrong information). That link is to the Schilthornbahn, not the official Swiss rail schedules at SBb.ch. The " train" on that page is no train, it is the Allmendhubel funicular that starts running at 9 and goes up above Mürren to Allmendhubel. It won't get you to Interlaken!!!! The train to Grutschalp, where you catch the cable car down to Lauterbrunnen, departs Murren at 6:06 am. You can see that on the SBB schedule( use Murren BLM which is the train station). This route gets you to Interlaken Ost 48 minutes later at 6:54. You can leave Mürren earlier ( ay 5:55 am) on the Schilthorn cable car, going down to Gimmelwald and Stechelberg, which is going backwards. This connects with the bus to Lauterbrunnen, where you catch the same train to Interlaken that you would have caught leaving Mürren BLM ten minutes later. Arrive Interlaken Ost at 6:54. This route takes longer than the train route Ken, Larry and I are trying to explain.

Thank you all for your insight! You've convinced me that we'll be fine staying in Murren.

Yes, you will be fine. Be sure to use SBB.ch (or rail.ch for English) for the train/cablecar/bus schedules, not the Schilthorn schedule on the link posted by Adam. On the day of the marathon, you can watch the runners (and hopefully your husband) pass through Lauterbrunnen and Wengen on their way to the finish at Kleine Scheidegg, where you will want to meet him. You can use the train to access all these towns. Does your husband by any chance train on the road up to Alta and on to Albion Basin? We spend a week up there almost every summer, and always see a few runners out there and on the trails around Snowbird.

Lola,
Thank you, that's my plan to take the train to the different cities to be able to take some photos during the marathon. He does alot of running in the mountains but not near Alta. He is usually one canyon over near Solitude.

Sasha, I stand corrected. That is the better option. Thank you.

Mürren is an easily accessed little village. Sometimes people make it sound much more difficult than it really is. There are only 2 routes up and the same 2 routes down via public transport. You'll be fine.

We were just there in July. While you are not too far away in Murren, it might be kind of nice to change it up a bit and stay in Lauterbrunnen the last 2 nights. It is the little village in the valley, below Murren. It is a beautiful valley, as well as a great base for many adventures. It also puts you that much closer to Interlaken, because you won't need to come off the cliff. We stayed in the much recommended Staubbach hotel. It is the second time we have stayed there and were not disappointed--great service, beautiful location. We also spent 2 nights in Murren, and while it is much smaller, still beautiful. I think 3 days in Murren would be plenty. Just a suggestion...
