Murren to Como via train

Hi. We are traveling from Murren/Interlaken to Lake Como. What would be the best train route to make this trip? Speed is not an issue, rather ease and scenic value. Thanks.

Have a look at the rail system map:

Tunnels through the Alps are shown as dotted lines, in case you want to avoid those.

Any way you go is going to involve a lot of train changes---probably 5 minimum. Deviations from one of the main routes to increase scenic value will involve more time and more changes.

Assuming you want to go to Como San Giovanni, probably the best compromise, for time, scenic value, and fewest changes is the 6:19 trip with five changes, via Interlaken Öst, over the Golden Pass scenic route to Luzern, change to Arth-Goldau, then south to Bellinzona, Lugano, and on to Como.

Todd, I will take the others at their word about the number of changes required. Last fall we went from Lauterbrunnen to Saltzburg and I believe there were 4 or 5 changes, all with less than 8 minutes. My wife and I had one medium bag each and we are both north of 65. No problem. Trains run on time and there are ramps to each platform. I did have the arrival and departure platforms printed out in advance so that I knew where we were going, which helped.

You'd change in Lauterbrunnen, Interlaken, Luzern, and Arth-Goldau for the minimum 4 changes.

If you route through Spiez and Brig (as I had originally assumed was the way to go) you'd have 7 changes: Lauterbrunnen, Interlaken, Spiez, Brig, Domodossola, Locarno and Giubiasco.

The trip south between Arth-Goldau and the Gotthard Tunnel is nice and scenic. Going past Wassen you pass the same church 3 times.

Coming from Muerren, they will also have a change at either Stechelberg or Grutschalp.

But they are all quick and easy to do.

I should clarify that my reference to the "6:19 trip" is a trip of 6 hours and 19 minutes---not one departing at 6:19 am! There are several oppportunities during the day to make th eright connections for this trip, leaving Mürren at a reasonable time---not 6:19 am.
