Some of the travel books say the motels are closed from Easter to June. Is most of the town closed in May due to spring thaw? Is there another town close that would be a better option for mid May? or is Murren still ok to visit in May?
I would not think they are closed but ck w/ your lodging options via email . If you do not stay in my favorite Murren try Lauterbrunnen in valley the hostel there is vg, some w/ pvt rooms even. prob no motels there more like B&B's, Hotels or hostels.
A room, but sharing a WC is really no big deal. There is one WC upstairs and one on the main level...one of the two was always available when needed...it's a small place. BTW, they're quite clean.
We spent a week in Switzerland starting around May 23. Spent one night in Zermatt and then headed to Wengen. We had perfect weather the entire trip and there were wild flowers and Lilacs blooming everywhere. There were some closures of restaurants and hotels but not a real problem. It was wonderfully uncrowded, great hiking, and waterfalls coming off higher elevations from the melting snow. Murren looked like a great place to stay. Some lifts were not yet open.
We've been to Mürren several times and every time it's been at the end of May or first of June. Every time but one the weather has been perfect. The wildflowers are blooming and the throngs of tourists haven't decended so you'll mostly see the locals. No, the hotels aren't closed - maybe some but definitely not all. We love the Chalet Fontana. We've also stayed at the Hotel Alpenruh and have looked at the very nice Hotel Blumental. You really just can't beat Mürren for those fantastic views. It's like another world.
Did NOT have any such problems a few May's ago. Our weather was also fantastic. Hope yours is too.
I'll second Chalet Fontana.
I also had no problem finding a hotel or with weather at the end of May. I do recall that before my trip, I had read that May can be "if-y" when it comes to weather, (was last week of May, if I recall), but as it was the only time we could do it that year due to work/family schedules, we took our chances and it ended up being very nice. Was sunny and pleasent the entire time we were in the Bernese Oberland, with the typical/expected colder weather up on the peaks (Jungfraujock, Schilthiorn and surrounding, etc.), which we were prepared for w/ the proper clothing (layers; the way to go!) Only rainy day we encountered was down South in Zermatt. Rained down in the village, and snowed up on the mountain, which ended up being perfect as we took advantage of spring skiing and got in a great day on the slopes. I know that some places close for the winter and re-open in late Spring/early Summer(encountered same thing in St. Anton am Arlberg, in the Austrian Tyrol), but there were enough places that were open.
Thanks for the info! For those that stayed at Chalet Fontana, did you pick an apartment at Chalet or a room. My friend that I am traveling with is not sure about sharing a bathroom.
Thanks! I have been having trouble finding direct web sites for motels. They always take me to booking.com or other booking agents. So, thanks for the direct Murren link. Plan on spending the first night in Interlaken any suggestions for places to stay that are not to pricey?
