Our family of four (our children's ages are 11 and 8) will be traveling to Murren, Switzerland for 6 days at the end of July. We are trying to pack fairly light. We plan to do a lot of hiking. What kind of weather can we expect while there? Just trying to figure out the packing:)
We were there in early July for 6 days. We used a light fleece jacket, umbrella and a light poncho...even for other areas in Europe. Never know when it will rain. They all came in handy in Lauterbrunnen and Murren.
You need rain jackets for sure. Layer over long-sleeve fitness shirt for warmth if necessary. It shouldn't be too cold but it could be wet! Or it could be all sunshine. You never know about mountain weather.
Does it get hot when the sun is out? Do we need hot weather layers as well?
When the sun is out it can be nice and warm. Light t-shirt and shorts weather.
Yes, it can definitely feel quite warm, especially at the end of July, so you'll want shorts & a tank top/tee. But a fleece and rain jacket are needed, too. Keep it simple, but do remember that mountain weather is changeable. Today we began hiking (close to the Berner Oberland) in warm, sunny weather and finished in cool temps just before a major thunderstorm hit.
I was in Murren this June and had only one day of light drizzle, rest of the time it was gorgeous weather. We brought ponchos and umbrellas just in case. You can never tell what will happen in the mountains.
We have been there 3 times at th eend of July and have seen everything from warm and sumnny (mid-70's) to cool and misty to pouring rain. but mostly we have been able to hike in shorts and athletic Tshirs (the fast-dry kind). Always carry the rain jacket just in case!
I'm going to be down the hill in Gimmelwald at the same time. I wasn't going to bring a rain jacket but maybe I'll reconsider now...
Yes, Lisa, you'll want a light rain jacket. On the other hand, don't worry about an umbrella ~ not for hiking purposes, anyway. I don't know about you, but I don't head up to the Cascades with an umbrella, kwim? If it drizzles, you get a bit wet. No biggie. If there's a true downpour, an umbrella won't do much for you ~ and may well be a hassle, if there's wind (not to mention a lightning rod). Overall, though, I think anyone from the Pacific Northwest who has even a vague familiarity with hiking will be fine with a minimalist approach.
In the summer in the Alps, I've experienced everything from scorchingly hot temperatures to fresh snowfall. Most likely, though, you will get warm days with mildly cool nights. As others have noted, be prepared for rain at all times.
Thanks for all of the advice and information. It sounds a lot like the Canadian Rockies. You get a great mix of weather!
