I am traveling with my two young children to Switzerland in late Aug/early Sep and had asked earlier if we should stay in Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen or Murren. Based on the responses on this board, I have decided on staying up in the mountains. But now I am wondering if it should be in Murren or Wengen. Does anyone have a preference/recommendation? Thank you.
They're both great but I like Murren more. I like the geography of it and the views from it more.
We love them both, but like Susan have a slight preference for Mürren. It is higher, has a better view of mountains, and offers more hiking trails right from the town. Wengen, on the other hand, has the reputation of being sunnier. You really cannot go wrong with either one. Something to consider is that you cannot reach Mürren without riding a cablecar partway. Some people love that and some hate it. You should consider which group you might be in. Another way to decide is to start looking for lodging and see what really appeals to you. Mürren has a great budget option in Chalet Fontana, but if you want a view and balcony that will not work. Hotel Bellevue in Wenden has a model railway in the back that might charm your kids.
I prefer the views from Murren. I also prefer the hiking--in my experience, that side is a bit prettier and more bucolic (more cows with bells, fewer ski lift towers). But, Wengen has more hotels and restaurants (it's slightly bigger), so if Murren doesn't have the amenities you want, Wengen is still a good place.
Thank you all. Murren it is! I made a reservation at Hotel Eiger. Thanks again for the input.
KT, you will LOVE it and not want to leave!
Mürren is a great choice. Sounds like you're already set with hotel, but I'm going to throw Chalet Fontana out there for others to consider...great small place with fantastic view of the mountains. It's almost as though you could reach out and touch them...beautiful scenery up there. And there's a lot to do in the area for kids aside from hiking. The Sportzentrum has a lot of activities, including swimming. Happy travels!
