Murren/Gimmelwald Cheese Hut/Waterwheel

Early this morning I watched a recording "Rick Steves Swiss Alps" on HDnet. The transcript is attached below.

We are curious to know which village (Murren or Gimmelwald or in between) "Veronica's" cheese hut sits. If she happens to be making cheese we would love a peak. Also, there is also a water wheel in the program but he doesn't really say where that is either. I think maybe Murren or along the way or something. Is there anyone who has trekked this area that knows what I'm talking about?

Thanks!

I can't verify it for 100% certainty, but I would bet Gimmelwald. And I don't recall seeing a waterwheel between Murren and Gimmelwald, although I may have missed it.

On the main road through Gimmelwald there is a cheese hut and right up the hill a bit is a large farm (probablty the factory). Can miss it since there is one main small road on the way up to or from Murren.

I haven't been able to find anything on either of these two.

I know there is a cheese hut in Gimmelwald, and certainly I never saw a waterwheel on my travels from Gimmelwald to Muerren or down to stechelberg. If it is in the Murren area it may be along the path to Gimmeln (It's not on the main path to Grutscalp, but might be in one of the valleys)

If you have the time/inclination I can recommend Obersteinberg if you want to see real cheesemaking and some spectacular scenery. Not a simple stroll, but a moderately strenuous hike (in places).

You can read about the cheesemaking at http://www.adirondack.org/news/newsletter0709.php read about the basic hike at http://www.users.bigpond.com/franksoft/guide/Chapter2/oberhorn.htm and read about the hotel at http://www.stechelberg.ch/de/gastro/bh_og.htm (german only) or look at some photos at http://www.speedybar.ch/events/obersteinberg.htm

Ali,

In reading the transcript, it appears that the water wheel might be between the top of the Funicular and Murren? I didn't hike that particular route when I was there, so can't say for sure.

I'm also not sure about the cheese hut? Esther (who runs a large B&B in Gimmelwald) has a store that sells local organic produce, but I don't know if they produce the cheese in Gimmelwald, or whether they buy it from others (Veronica)?

You might send a note to RS using the "Contact Us" link, as I'm sure they would be able to answer your questions.

Cheers!
