Murren: early departure.

The train we wish to catch departs Interlaken at 8:01. If we spend our last night in Murren, are the lifts open early enough to make it to Interlaken in time? Or would that be too rushed? We are thinking of checking out of our Murren hotel early and spending the last night in Interlaken, closer to the train station. Any input from travelers who have visited Murren is appreciated. Thanks.

I had an early departure from Murren in October, but my train left Interlaken at 9:01. We had no trouble making our train. I personally would rather stay in Lauterbrunnen or Interlaken if I had the 8:01, but I HATE getting up early, so that would be a factor in my decision. You could still spend the day up in the mountains; I'm sure you could store your luggage at your hotel until you were ready to leave in the evening. The train/gondola from Murren down to Lauterbrunnen began at 6 am when we were there. You might want to send an email to the Murren tourist info center (or see if you can confirm what time the train from Murren starts) and work out your train connections from there, to make sure it's even possible to stay in Murren that night.

Todd, one note, when checking train schedules, Murren is spelled "Muerren" unless you use the umlaut symbol above the letter "u".

The connections are all timed to work. To catch the 8:01 from Interlaken Öst, you would leave Mürren on the train at 7:06. there is a transfer to a cablecar that is not shown on the schedules at either bahn.de or rail.ch, but it all works very smoothly. You arrive at Interlaken at 7:54, which is plenty of time to catch the 8:01.

That train, BTW, goes via Spiez and Milan, which is less scenic than the other route via Luzern and Lugano. If you wait a couple of minutes, or if you miss that 8:01, you could take a train going the other way at 8:04 and still be in Como San Giovanni in early afternoon, just 25 minutes later than the other train would get you there.

I think that's new (being able to just type "Murren" and have the website recognize it.) In the past, it would kick you over to Murten if you didn't use "ue" or "ü".

For anyone who cares, BLM is Bergbahn Lauterbrunnen-Mürren (the train + new cablecar) and LSMS is Luftseilbahn Mürren-Stechelberg. You connect to Lauterbrunnen with a bus. This route is amazing when you swing out past the cliff coming down from Gimmelwald, with about 2,000 feet of air below you. I recommend everyone do it once, unless you are severly acrophobic. It does take a bit longer than the other way.

We like to go up viz Grutschalp and down via the cablecar to Stechelberg.

If you just start at "Mürren (station/stop)" on the rail.ch website it will show you both routes.
