Murren Cycling

We are planned for a day in Murren Switzerland to do a bicycle ride (downhill) and return via funicular. How much time should we allow for the ride (down & up)? We'll be arriving & departing same day, so I don't want to get stuck part way if it takes too long!

Robin, Which "Funicular" were you planning to use for the trip back to Mürren? The Funicular that used to run from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp was replaced in 2006 with a Cable Car, so the method shown in Rick's video is a bit "different" now. Happy travels!

We did this last Sept (even rented fr the guy in the Rick Steves episode - he's Canadian - yay!)...and I think we rented the bike around 12:30ish and we just made it back by 5pm when he closed...now, we only biked down - unfortunately, I'm not in the best of biking shape, and we took a diff route fr the RS one and ended up on a steepish gravel road, where I proceeded to take a header off the bike (lovely bruises I had) and become paranoid and walked most of the way down. We also stopped to see Trummelbach Falls, which was maybe 45min...so, if you are in great (well, better then me, lol) shape and start earlier, depending on the route you shouldn't have a prob- we were hustling to get back to the shop and took the bikes back up on the funicular - that was pricey! Factor that into your costs...if you could bike back up, you'll save $$. We didn't even have time to visit Gimmelwald...had we known that, I think we would have started earlier - like 11am.

Thank you Nicole, that helps! Several of my traveling companions & I have ridden what may be a similar downhill ride including gravel, so I expect we'll be ok. The funicular is part of the appeal for me, so I really don't want to ride back up!

We took a funicular up to I think Gimmelwald then drove quickly fr there to Murren - I'll have to see if I can find the map - I'm sure we kept it...

There used to be a funicular up to Grutschalp from Lauterbrunnen. It still exists in the Rick Steves video, but it was replaced with a cable car over the same route in 2006-07. There is also a cable car up from Stechelberg to Gimmelwald. Either one should carry a bike; people get on with freight carts and all kinds of things.

Looking at a map, that is (I'm 99%) what we did - Stechelburg to Gimmelwald, then biked back to Murren.

@Nicole, Thanks for the additional information. I was confused by the terminology, as there is NO Funicular from Stechelberg to Gimmelwald - only a Cable Car. I imagine the bike ride from Gimmelwald to Mürren was a bit of work as it's all uphill. Cheers!

Ahhhh, Ken, don't confuse me...this was 2 yrs ago(that's like 20 yrs for my brain)...lol...and bad me didn't keep a journal last trip like I did for our 1st one :) I think I do rem getting off one thing and getting on another, and prob grumbling that we didn't have time to see Gimmel as we only had like 10 min to get back to Murren before the store would be closed....now I'm sure we did go up fr Gimmel to Murren...I guess I should get my story straight ;)

@Nicole, Based on your description, it sounds like you took the Cable Car all the way. When you reached the station in Stechelberg, you would have climbed some stairs (or used an Elevator) to reach the departure level. The first leg on the Cable Car (rather steep) would take you to Gimmelwald. You exit one car and walk across the platform and immediately board another car. After a short five minute ride, you'll disembark in Mürren. As I recall, the bike shop is at the other end of town from the Cable Car station. If you had disembarked in Gimmelwald with bikes, you would have had to climb uphill past Walter's Hotel Mittaghorn to reach the trail (paved) that leads to Mürren. As it's all uphill, so it's highly doubtful that ride could be done in 10 minutes. Cheers!
