Hi all - I am traveling tomorrow from Munich train station to the munich airport. I have one day on my eurorail pass - can i use that to pay for the ticket from the train station to the airport? Should I buy a 10 euro ticket to the airport or take my chances without? also, any tips for the munich airport? Thanks!!
I'll let somebody else answer to ticket question. However, as to tips: once you've checked your bag and want coffee and/or something to eat, go to the full-service supermarket "Edeka" instead of a restaurant. Everything, including coffee, is much cheaper. It's maybe a five min. or less walk inside the terminal - just remember your landmarks or ask one of the airport personnel. I think there are two - Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. I drank my coffee sitting at the counter. They asked did I want a real cup or a go cup. I opted for real and had to pay like 3 Euro as a deposit, which I got back when I checked out. I guess they have problems with people walking off with the cups as souvenirs. The Munich airport is my favorite in Europe - really user-friendly.
The train to the Munich airport is an S-Bahn, and the Eurail pass is valid on the S-Bahn in Germany. The pass, however, is not valid on any other conveyances (U-Bahn, trams, or buses). If you have one day left and you are leaving Europe, you might as well use it. You don't use it to "pay for your ticket"; you just write in the date on the pass like any other pass day. If you are going to go somewhere else where you can use the pass, it probably makes sense to buy a ticket to the airport for €10 and save the pass for a more expensive day. There are two terminals at the airport and the S-Bahn station is between them. You'll probably be using Terminal 2. Come up the stairs out of the station and across the covered open space to the Terminal.
Two different S-Bahn, lines S1 and S8, go to the airport. They both leave from the tief=deep, meaning underground, station under Arnulfstrasse, the street to the north of the Hbf. They go opposite directions. Whichever S-Bahn gets to the tief station next will get you to the airport first. You get on the S-Bahn from a platform between the tracks. One side will be marked "Richtung (direction) Ostbahnhof", the otherside "Richtung Pasing". You want the S8 going to Ostbahnhof or the S1 going towards Pasing. There are lighted signs above the tracks with the number of the next S-Bahn and how many minutes until it arrives. If you take the S-1, sit near the back half of the train. It splits in Neufahrn, with the front half going to Freising. Only the back half goes to the airport. The destination will probably be marked on the outside of the car.
Thank you all for your help! Your advice made my travel easier. No one ever did check tickets on the S-Bahn to the airport but I had my one day left of travel on my Eurrail pass so I was covered either way. Thanks again
