Hello! I'm arriving tomorrow night in Munich at 10:30 pm (so after Oktoberfest ends for the day) and staying Thursday and Friday until 2 pm. What should I do? Of course Oktoberfest but is there anything else I MUST do? Museums? Other sites? Any suggestions for Oktoberfest? I don't have a reservation at any tents but its a Thursday..? Danke!
Well of course Oktoberfest will take up a good chunk of your time and even if you are not on the grounds...you are probably recovering from being there. On Thursday arrive at the grounds as early as possible...11am or noon. That should get you into the tents without too much trouble. Look for the tables marked "no reservation" because you can plop down and stay as long as you like without being kicked out for a reservation. Don't forget to eat. Dress the part if you can...half the people there are in lederhosen and dirndls. Pace yourself! It's a long day. The Hacker Pshorr tent and the Lowenbrau are my favorite tents. Later in the night is when we seem to end up at the small tents and those are just as much fun. You really get to know people sitting nearby at the smaller tents. We are very sad to not be there this year...maybe next year. For other things to do....though the Glockenspeil in the square is really nothing much to see - it is the image of Munich that is most commonly seen on tv so it is nice to have that memory of being there. The outdoor market nearby is really nice. The English Garden is great (and maybe helps burn off some of that hangover). I was not a fan of the Deutches Museum - when I was there it seemed like half the stuff was broken in terms of interactive buttons and lights for the exhibits. The Residenz is worth a visit - but the audio guide is very boring. We didn't go in the Treasury, but I heard it is good. Since you will be at Oktoberfest, a visit to the Hofbrauhaus is really un-necessary. But if you want to say you have been there and get a souvenior - you can stop in for a Liter. I have not yet been to Dachau. That's all I can think of for the moment.
Thank you so much Amy! That is a great help. A colleague of mine (actually from Munich) also recommended the English garden so I will definitely check it out.
